Apologies for being late guys! Things have been kinda handful lately so we’re really glad that we finally have time to post something up about the show. To those who weren’t there, KL Big Party was held on 5th June 2010 at One Cafe, KL. We arrived to see the place packed with gig-goers, some were stationed right in front of the stage, s0me were taking a breather outside and some recharging themselves with food and drinks. There were also band t-shirts sold at the gig and it was really great to see more bands coming up with amazing designs for their merchandise! So, okay, we’ll not bore you with words, check out some of the photos of the gig, courtesy of www.melodica.com.my

It’s just so great to see the local independent music scene growing bigger day by day. Over the years, we’re seeing a number of local independent bands breaking into the mainstream market, winning prestigious music awards and playing shows outside of the country. Not only that, independent bands are getting more creative and serious about the business and have been producing amazing albums and music videos. So, with that we’d like to share with you 10 of our favourite music videos by local independent acts. (We’re not ranking them though, just sharing our favourite 10 :) )

Pop Shuvit – Oh! Sizuka.
You really gotta check this one out cause it’s just super cool with all things 80’s! The video really brings you back to your childhood days, i tell ‘ya.

Pure Vibration – Love
Taken off their album ‘Love & Peace’, this is a great song to chill out to. Spreading the love all around is what they aim to do and you can really see that in this video, with some cool cameo appearances by friends from other bands and famous faces in the music industry.

Butterfingers – Mati Hidup Kembali
One of their best songs from the album ‘Kembali’. We’re liking the natural and spontaneous singing/acting by the boys in the video. Plus, the concept of war that they portray in the video (though not too extreme) gives more emotions to the song.

SevenCollar T-Shirt – Wild Child
This is the first single from SevenCollar T-Shirt’s latest album ‘The Great Battle’. Adapting the concept from their album artwork, this video is simple yet truly showcases the band’s personality and music direction for this album. Pretty amazing camera work and editing too.

Hujan – Bila Aku Sudah Tiada
A great song that is complimented by a great video. Shot in black and white and featuring Noh as the lead subject, the video was shot at the now defunct Flat Pekeliling. The location somehow fits the lyrics of the song perfectly.

Hollywood Holiday – Love Me Butch
This is probably one of the most creatively produced music videos in Malaysia, especially among independent artists. Edited with some amazing computer graphics, this video certainly set a benchmark for budding video producers in the country.

Disagree – Osaka
Here’s another video that sticks to the concept of the album cover. It is fully animated and actually kind of…cute. Heh…awesome song too, check this one out…

Estranged – Yang Pernah
The first independent band to win the Anugerah Juara Lagu with their hit ‘Itu Kamu’, Estranged came out with their first single from the album ‘Remain Unknown’ with this song. The boys looked a tad bit different with the ‘guyliner’ on, but hey check out the individual ‘rocking out’ shots and the band performance shots as well. We think they rock.

Phlowtron – Adikku Pandai Menari
This is Phlowtron’s first single from their 2008 album WARISAN SENIKATA MALAYA. Using motion graphics, the video looks fresh and alive, full of colours…complimenting the song well.

Stonebay – Si Murai Penipu
Finally, a music video from this awesome song! After releasing ‘Si Murai Penipu’ for a few months now, Stonebay recently released its official music video, and we are loving it! The black-and-white comic book inspired video just gives this song a little bit more punch and we bet you can’t get enough of it.

There you go, our favourite music videos by local independent acts so far. If you think we’ve missed out on any other great music videos, share with us right here! We wanna know what YOU like. Cheers!

Yuna

Yuna

Yup yup! Our favourite songstress with that haunting silky voice is now in Los Angeles, California. Yunalis Mat Zara’ai aka Yuna, together with her cousin-cum-Personal Assistant, Wawa are currently there to do some music label-shopping. We’re so psyched for her and we know you want to know more…so here’s some juicy scoop for you, straight from Yuna herself, enjoy!

How have you been? Tell us a bit about your life and career after winning 1st runner up at the recent AJL.

I’ve been good! My life has been hectic after AJL, been busier but I’m very blessed because I’m busy with work – my music and my shop in SS15, but it’s all good! I prefer being busy with work than doing nothing.

You also have a boutique. How is it going now? Is business blooming after your AJL victory?

Business is okay! A lot of people are still searching for the location of the shop. It’s actually really easy to find, but for those who are from out of town, it’s a bit difficult for them to spot the shop.

You’re in America at the moment. Tell us how it all happened and what you’ll be doing over there.

Well my manager, Ben was from this management label its called Indie-Pop. He discovered my music via Youtube/Myspace, so he flew down to Malaysia to come and see me, and we had the same goal in making music in the States. He was really interested in promoting my music to the USA, so yea. My goal is to go international so I see this as a really good opportunity for me to do that.

If things go well in America, and you have the chance to cut a deal there, would you go for it and leave Malaysia for a while? Will you take your current band mates with you?

I love Malaysia – I dont really like the term ‘leaving Malaysia’, it’s more of ‘doing something for Malaysia’ so yea of course, I’d have to work here but I would definitely come home, I have so many responsibilities back home as well. If things go well in the future, I’d love to have my bandmates around too. But it’s just me alone for now.

How is your new album production going? How long more until you release it and what can we expect from this album?

I’m still recording, and there’s still a lot to do, but since I’m gonna go to LA, it might take a little while to finish. In this album you’ll listen to the ‘darker’ side of Yuna i think. But not too dark. I think people will still be able to enjoy it.

You seem like a very down-to-earth person. What do you like to do to wind down after a long day of working…and how do you spend your day off?

I like to go online and read stuff, I love fashion blogs and European street style blogs… sometimes I’d watch DVD, but my favourite thing to do to just relax is to play Sims3. I love that game.

Every artist dreams of sharing the stage with their fav band/singer. Who is it for you?

Lykke Li! Because she’s so quirky and cute. I love her music so much. My favourite band is Coldplay. It sounds crazy and lame if I’d tell people that I dream of sharing a stage with them but I’m just gonna say it anyway. Lol!

As a songwriter, who would you like to collaborate with if you had the chance and why?
Bjork. Who wouldn’t dream of collaborating with Bjork?

Get more updates from Yuna by adding her on Facebook here. You can also add her on twitter here.

couple uk

Malaysia’s very own power-pop sensation, Couple is set to make waves in the UK this March, thanks to the awesome people at KNUKE (Kugiran Negara ke UK Enterprise). In 2008, KNUKE flew Hujan to the UK, to perform for the Malaysian community there especially the students, where they had shows around Liverpool, Cardiff, Manchester & Sheffield. The following year, Estrella and SevenCollar T-shirt were chosen for the event. This time, they even had a camera crew from 8TV to shoot a rockumentary of their UK tour and were also sponsored by Air Asia X for the trip. The shows were successful and the demand for Malaysian bands to perform in the UK proved to be very encouraging. Realizing this and the amount of talent we have right here in Malaysia, KNUKE is now bringing Couple to the UK starting 19th March 2010 to 29th March 2010. And once again, they will be flying to the UK courtesy of Air Asia X.

KNUKE has officially booked 3 shows for Couple in London, Manchester and Liverpool.  In addition to these shows, Couple has also managed to get themselves 2 extra shows during their stay there. The first one will be at the Dirty Water Club night, followed by another at a small pub called The Windmill. Both venues carry rocking reputations and have had bands like Bloc Party, The White Stripes, Shonen Knife and The Monks (to name a few) perform there.

So, if you happen to be in Britain this March or have friends and family there, please help spread the news. Catch Couple rock it out at these venues:

19th March – KNUKE Presents: Couple UK Tour @ Students’ Union, University Of Manchester

21st March – Dirty Water Club @ The Stag’s Head, London

23rd March – KNUKE Presents: Couple UK Tour @ The Backroom @ Bumper, Liverpool

24th March – The Windmill, Brixton, London

Okay, yes this is super overdue. Apologies for this, was waiting for the photos to arrive.. ;p

The much talked about Hypptunes Rock The World 9 (yes, the excitement AND the rants too) had finally taken place on 26 December 2009. The whole day music event reportedly drew about 10,000 music fans from across the country. Some even started arriving at Car Park A, Bukit Jalil Stadium as early as 10am. The Hypptunes team was there to cover the entire event and we were truly overdosed with music at the end of the day!

As all of you know, there were 3 stages featuring Malaysia’s best independent acts, but too bad we could not gather enough manpower to capture every single moment at the concert. However, I think we did a pretty good job running from one stage to another with our cameras and what not all day long so we could share some awesome moments with you guys right here.

The concert started off with the winners of the Hypptunes Rock The World 9 Band Search. It was supposed to start at 12 noon, however due to some unforeseen intricacy, the Indie Stage was requested to kick off the show earlier, at 10.30am.

The scene at the Car Park A that afternoon was just like any other music festival – people walking around checking out different interesting booths, some were stationed at their preferred stage, some were happily snacking away oh and of course, not forgetting the must-do thing at any event; the ‘cam-whoring’ session. The weather was kind to us too then but just as things were going smoothly with the crowd just starting to warm up to the opening bands like Pitbull Inc., Robot Asmara, Aku, Jeopardice, Kugiran di Tepi Pantai! and Khottal to name a few, the sky grew darker and within minutes, the rain began pouring so heavily. Those with access to the VIP tent ran inside for shelter and everyone else practically squeezed themselves under every booth around the concert area. Some were even taking shelter in the portable toilets! The rain was too heavy that the concert had to be stopped for a while. After an hour or so, the organizers started setting up the stages again and this time, it was the crowd’s turn to show no mercy to the weather. It was still drizzling, but these rocking people stayed put at all 3 stages, giving their full support to the performers. Kudos to you guys for rocking hard in your wet and ‘squishy’ shoes!

This is beginning to look like an essay and you’re probably yawning already, so let’s just go ahead with the rest of the details with some photos ok? Most of them are from the main stage, but we’ll keep posting more photos on our Facebook page so do look us up – www.hypptunes.com.my on Facebook!

On Saturday, 5th December, the Hypptunes Rock The World 9 team were at Laundry Bar, The Curve for the Selangor round, which was hosted by Rina Omar. 15 bands were scheduled to compete, however Awan Band, Sorganina and Freak of Channel pulled out at the very last minute thus giving way to The Laa Laa, Shiver and Coca de Monday to take their slots. We were rocked out from the very first performance by Instake to the very last one by The Everyday. We had everything from Alternative, Indie and Brit Rock to Punk and even some Old School Rock. This time, not only the music blew us away, but it seemed as if we were in a fashion district somewhere in the UK or something, with bands like Sinopsis, The Everyday and The Laa Laa came dressed up in their skin-tight jeans, jackets, leather shoes, fitted tees and not to mention rocking hairstyles too! The judges – Reza (Saturnine), Fumi (John’s Mistress), Saiful (Y2K) and Ben (TM representative) had an awfully hard time deliberating and in the end they collectively agreed to give Exorage a spot to perform at this year’s Rock The World.

The following day, we headed to Cloth & Clef, Changkat Bukit Bintang to wrap up the Hypptunes Rock The World 9 Band Search tour. Out of the 15 bands confirmed to perform here, 3 bands – Bau, Phlox and Jiwa pulled out at the eleventh hour due to personal matters. It was a day of rock & roll goodness, with bands like Saving Grace Period, Pitbull Inc. and Rock & Roll John stealing the show with some fierce vocals and killer guitar solos. Similar to Selangor, the KL round too saw a mixture of music genres where apart from loud and pumping rock music, the crowd also got to enjoy some laid-back music from Poet Stories and Indie Mice as well as groove to Jeopardice’s progressive funk rock numbers. Watching all the 12 bands surely gave the judges of the day – singer-songwriter Rashdan Harith, Bo and Rina Omar a tough time deciding on who should represent KL at the concert. In the end, the highest points of the day went to none other than hard rockers, Pitbull Inc.!

But the surprise didn’t stop there! Just before everyone left, David (from Fatboys) announced that another 4 bands will be chosen for the wild card slots. The bands are Kyoto Protocol (who competed in Melaka), Coca De Monday (Selangor) and 2 bands from KL – Rock & Roll John and Jeopardice! Well done, everyone!

So, that’s it! We are finally done with the Hypptunes Rock The World 9 Band Search tour. It was truly an experience for the team, checking out all of the bands who sent in their registrations to be a part of the Band Search. Don’t think we don’t feel disappointed to have not been able to slot ALL of you in (more than 100 bands registered!!), because we do! It was not an easy decision to make, but we had to do what he had to do :( Nevertheless, on behalf of the Hypptunes Rock The World 9 team, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to all of the bands who registered, regardless you got through or not (and not forgetting those who walked-in too). Due to the overwhelming response, the team is flowing with ideas to have more events in the future and we surely wanna include you talented people! So lets cross our fingers and keep a look out, yeah?

We’re all gearing up for the finale concert now, so see you at Hypptunes Rock The World 9!!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Last weekend, the Hypptunes RTW 9 team traveled up north to check out the bands scheduled to compete in Penang and Ipoh. Our first stop was Penang and apart from being excited to find out who’s gonna be representing Penang at this year’s Rock the World 9, we were all geared up to go food hunting! The crew arrived in Penang on Friday evening and we took the opportunity to fully utilize our free time that night. Some of us went to Hard Rock Hotel Penang and some went to get some glorious food at Gurney Drive. We drove to the famous ‘Nasi Kandar Beratur’ that night but unfortunately it was closed due to Hari Raya Haji.

Okay, enough about food. The next morning, the crew arrived at the event venue, QE II to set up the place. The venue and the view were simply breathtaking. The stage was set up facing the wide open sea and there were many boats and ferries around. We were supposed to have about 5 bands competing but due to unforeseen circumstances only 4 made it to the competition. It was probably because a lot of people were still out of town celebrating Hari Raya Haji. Nevertheless, the band search went as planned and the 4 bands – The Last Son, Marble, Ceased War and Slippin’ & Slidin’ put up a good show. We were entertained with the sounds of Pop Punk (The Last Son), Brit Rock (Marble), Metal (Ceased War) and Rock & Roll (Slippin’ & Slidin’). The bands were judged by Izuan of Auburn, Loque of Butterfingers/Monoloque and Tam of Blind Tribe. After watching all the bands, the judges collectively agreed to give the winning spot to Ceased War for their rock solid metal songs and performance.

As we finished earlier than usual, the crew spent some more time hanging around Penang Island and only left for Ipoh around late evening. We spent the night resting in our hotel room and getting ourselves prepared for a busy Sunday as we had 15 bands confirmed for the Ipoh Band Search! The next day, we were delighted to see a big crowd at the venue, Houz Pub. Most bands arrived early and looked excited to battle on stage. A lot of them were from Perak but there were also a few bands from KL. We saw mostly Punk Rock and Indie Rock bands and a few Metalcore bands. There were many promising acts in this round like Dichi Michi who gave a breath of fresh air to their Punk Rock songs by adding a synthesizer, Siren who writes catchy Pop Rock stuff, Bactrim with their infectious groove and Beneath the Remains who has an awesome pair of vocalists. It wasn’t an easy task to select the winner in Ipoh as it was a very competitive round. In the end, the judges, Izuan, Loque and David of Disagree decided to bring Ipoh’s Progressive-funk-rock act, Bactrim to Hypptunes Rock the World 9.

Both winning bands are awesome to watch so make sure you check out Ceased War and Bactrim at Hypptunes Rock The World 9!
