It’s just so great to see the local independent music scene growing bigger day by day. Over the years, we’re seeing a number of local independent bands breaking into the mainstream market, winning prestigious music awards and playing shows outside of the country. Not only that, independent bands are getting more creative and serious about the business and have been producing amazing albums and music videos. So, with that we’d like to share with you 10 of our favourite music videos by local independent acts. (We’re not ranking them though, just sharing our favourite 10 :) )

Pop Shuvit – Oh! Sizuka.
You really gotta check this one out cause it’s just super cool with all things 80’s! The video really brings you back to your childhood days, i tell ‘ya.

Pure Vibration – Love
Taken off their album ‘Love & Peace’, this is a great song to chill out to. Spreading the love all around is what they aim to do and you can really see that in this video, with some cool cameo appearances by friends from other bands and famous faces in the music industry.

Butterfingers – Mati Hidup Kembali
One of their best songs from the album ‘Kembali’. We’re liking the natural and spontaneous singing/acting by the boys in the video. Plus, the concept of war that they portray in the video (though not too extreme) gives more emotions to the song.

SevenCollar T-Shirt – Wild Child
This is the first single from SevenCollar T-Shirt’s latest album ‘The Great Battle’. Adapting the concept from their album artwork, this video is simple yet truly showcases the band’s personality and music direction for this album. Pretty amazing camera work and editing too.

Hujan – Bila Aku Sudah Tiada
A great song that is complimented by a great video. Shot in black and white and featuring Noh as the lead subject, the video was shot at the now defunct Flat Pekeliling. The location somehow fits the lyrics of the song perfectly.

Hollywood Holiday – Love Me Butch
This is probably one of the most creatively produced music videos in Malaysia, especially among independent artists. Edited with some amazing computer graphics, this video certainly set a benchmark for budding video producers in the country.

Disagree – Osaka
Here’s another video that sticks to the concept of the album cover. It is fully animated and actually kind of…cute. Heh…awesome song too, check this one out…

Estranged – Yang Pernah
The first independent band to win the Anugerah Juara Lagu with their hit ‘Itu Kamu’, Estranged came out with their first single from the album ‘Remain Unknown’ with this song. The boys looked a tad bit different with the ‘guyliner’ on, but hey check out the individual ‘rocking out’ shots and the band performance shots as well. We think they rock.

Phlowtron – Adikku Pandai Menari
This is Phlowtron’s first single from their 2008 album WARISAN SENIKATA MALAYA. Using motion graphics, the video looks fresh and alive, full of colours…complimenting the song well.

Stonebay – Si Murai Penipu
Finally, a music video from this awesome song! After releasing ‘Si Murai Penipu’ for a few months now, Stonebay recently released its official music video, and we are loving it! The black-and-white comic book inspired video just gives this song a little bit more punch and we bet you can’t get enough of it.

There you go, our favourite music videos by local independent acts so far. If you think we’ve missed out on any other great music videos, share with us right here! We wanna know what YOU like. Cheers!

Remember all the hu-ha about Malaysians and Indonesians being nasty with each other a couple of weeks back? Well that certainly wasn’t the case at the Mocca 10th Anniversary Pre-Show/Fan Meet-and-Greet session at Badger Malaysia, which happened on last October 28th. Oh btw, if you haven’t heard of Badger, it’s actually a fashion label, based in Bandung, Indonesia. Badger (and its sister brands, Anti-Beauty and Voltra) carries street wear fashion for both guys and girls that caters to anyone who loves something quirky and fun, but still practical and definitely wearable on a daily basis. Heck, they even have awesome blazer inspired jackets now, so it’s perfect for office wear too. Badger is now in Malaysia and to find out more, visit www.badgermalaysia.com

So anyway, back to the pre-show. That night, the Badger boutique was transformed into a mini music hall to make way for fans to meet and enjoy some music from not only Mocca but opening acts Tonawarna, Yuna and Hanafi of Estranged. FYI, both Hanafi and Yuna are the official endorsees of Badger and Anti- Beauty respectively. After Tonawarna opened the show with some melodious Indo-inspired music, Yuna charmingly took the stage with her super sing-along songs. Before ending her set with Dan Sebenarnya, Yuna invited Hanafi to join her on stage to perform a song they co-wrote together for Hanafi’s college project, called ‘Sparkle’. It was indeed a beautifully written song…very heartfelt; you’d wanna listen to it over and over again. Too bad it’s not promoted commercially at the moment, but do keep a look out, they might have something in planning…who knows, right?

Mocca then went up on stage to perform an acoustic set that blew everyone’s mind that night! Arina’s sweet-as-sugar vocals were top notch and the band was just simply superb. They performed favourites like ‘Secret Admirer’, ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ and ‘The Best Thing in the World’. They had everyone joyfully clapping and singing along with the music.

Too bad the Hypptunes team couldn’t make it for the finale concert on October 31st due to some other work commitment. However, judging from this pre-show’s short and sweet affair, we’re pretty sure everyone had a blast at the concert :)

Here are some pictures at the pre-show…
