It’s just so great to see the local independent music scene growing bigger day by day. Over the years, we’re seeing a number of local independent bands breaking into the mainstream market, winning prestigious music awards and playing shows outside of the country. Not only that, independent bands are getting more creative and serious about the business and have been producing amazing albums and music videos. So, with that we’d like to share with you 10 of our favourite music videos by local independent acts. (We’re not ranking them though, just sharing our favourite 10 :) )

Pop Shuvit – Oh! Sizuka.
You really gotta check this one out cause it’s just super cool with all things 80’s! The video really brings you back to your childhood days, i tell ‘ya.

Pure Vibration – Love
Taken off their album ‘Love & Peace’, this is a great song to chill out to. Spreading the love all around is what they aim to do and you can really see that in this video, with some cool cameo appearances by friends from other bands and famous faces in the music industry.

Butterfingers – Mati Hidup Kembali
One of their best songs from the album ‘Kembali’. We’re liking the natural and spontaneous singing/acting by the boys in the video. Plus, the concept of war that they portray in the video (though not too extreme) gives more emotions to the song.

SevenCollar T-Shirt – Wild Child
This is the first single from SevenCollar T-Shirt’s latest album ‘The Great Battle’. Adapting the concept from their album artwork, this video is simple yet truly showcases the band’s personality and music direction for this album. Pretty amazing camera work and editing too.

Hujan – Bila Aku Sudah Tiada
A great song that is complimented by a great video. Shot in black and white and featuring Noh as the lead subject, the video was shot at the now defunct Flat Pekeliling. The location somehow fits the lyrics of the song perfectly.

Hollywood Holiday – Love Me Butch
This is probably one of the most creatively produced music videos in Malaysia, especially among independent artists. Edited with some amazing computer graphics, this video certainly set a benchmark for budding video producers in the country.

Disagree – Osaka
Here’s another video that sticks to the concept of the album cover. It is fully animated and actually kind of…cute. Heh…awesome song too, check this one out…

Estranged – Yang Pernah
The first independent band to win the Anugerah Juara Lagu with their hit ‘Itu Kamu’, Estranged came out with their first single from the album ‘Remain Unknown’ with this song. The boys looked a tad bit different with the ‘guyliner’ on, but hey check out the individual ‘rocking out’ shots and the band performance shots as well. We think they rock.

Phlowtron – Adikku Pandai Menari
This is Phlowtron’s first single from their 2008 album WARISAN SENIKATA MALAYA. Using motion graphics, the video looks fresh and alive, full of colours…complimenting the song well.

Stonebay – Si Murai Penipu
Finally, a music video from this awesome song! After releasing ‘Si Murai Penipu’ for a few months now, Stonebay recently released its official music video, and we are loving it! The black-and-white comic book inspired video just gives this song a little bit more punch and we bet you can’t get enough of it.

There you go, our favourite music videos by local independent acts so far. If you think we’ve missed out on any other great music videos, share with us right here! We wanna know what YOU like. Cheers!

It’s not hard to spot this petite young man on stage with his 7-piece band, The Otherside Orchestra. Looking spunky with his trademark ‘hawk’ and never letting a beat go by without grooving to it, Haizal is always ready for a smashing good time on stage. Being the avid music lover that he is, Haizal is constantly discovering new music to feed his soul. If you wanna know the kind of music that gets him through his daily life and the songs that colour his world, then check this out…

What are the Top 5 songs that you’re listening to right now?

1. Walking On A Dream – Empire of the Sun
2. The Reeling – Passion Pit
3. Cotopaxi – The Mars Volta
4. Carmensita – Devendra Banhart
5. Battle for the Sun – Placebo

What song/s pops in your head, or maybe best describes you when you’re…

You’re out cycling on a good day:
Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai..but usually I just shuffle his songs on my play list.

You’re feeling on top of the world:
Just press play to The Prodigy. All hail The Prodigy!!!

You’re indecisive about something:

Manhattan By Kings of Leon..because that song just makes me think a lot.

You’re in love:
Everything Is In The Right Place by Radiohead, Light My Fire and Touch Me by The Doors for “angau” moments :) … and for those “extra caring” nights, A Ribbon by Devendran Banhart and Make Love By Daft Punk :)

You feel lost:
When I listen to the radio..hehe…kiddin’…Lost? by Coldplay…hahaha!

Now, if you were to recommend an album/artist to a friend, what would it be?

SevenCollar T-Shirt’s new album The Great Battle. No other local bands ever reached that deep into my soul before. The words man!! Erghh!!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

This month, Hypptunes is proud to present one of Malaysia’s most talented rock acts, SevenCollar T-Shirt (SCTS) as HIP TRIP’s Artist of the Month. Having been around in the local independent music scene for about 12 years now, it is just about time that we celebrate the music and the tremendous amount of talent these boys have. It is also the perfect time to feature them on HIP TRIP as they have recently released their third full-length album ‘The Great Battle’ in November 2009.

A little bit about the band…

SevenCollar T-Shirt started out with initial members Saiful Ridzuan (Duan), Muhammad (Ham), Nik Justin and Faizal in the year 1997. In 1999, when Nik Justin and Faizal left the band due to commitment to work and studies, the band recruited new members Mohd Rafidi and Mokhtarizal to fill in the empty spots. The band recorded their first EP (which sold out!) and was invited to record a track for the Family Day compilation album alongside bands like Prana, Love Me Butch and Lyme, under Posse Records/NSR. In 2002, SCTS released their first full-length album ‘Freeway, Dreaming & Broke’ which was produced by renowned producer, Greg Henderson. Throughout 2003, the band’s work received recognitions from various publications including The Star, The Malay Mail and Revolution Magazine. However, the band went through another change of line up when Mokhtarizal and Mohd Rafidi left the band for work commitments. Their spots were replaced by Adil Ali (drums) and Keng Lee (bass). Their 2nd album, ‘Drones’ was recorded with Laguna Records and released in November 2004. This album got the band back on track with their new members and they soon began gigging and touring actively. In December 2006, they brought their music over to East Malaysia and Indonesia.

In 2007, to celebrate the band’s 10th year anniversary, SCTS together with Laguna Records held an anniversary show called ‘A Seven Collar Sonique Cinematique’ at The Actors Studio, Bangsar. Their performance on that night was accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra from UiTM Shah Alam. That same year, SCTS was given the privilege to compose a song for the NIKE ‘Jangan Togel’ campaign, in which they recorded a song called ‘My Generation’. This song was also featured in the short film/documentary ‘Togel’ and hit the number 2 spot on Hitz.fm’s Malaysian English Top 10 chart.

Last November, after about 4 years of some serious songwriting and rehearsing, SCTS has finally released their much-awaited third album ‘The Great Battle’. It is an album full of emotions and loaded with creativity, not only in the songs but the album artwork as well. The band is currently back on the road, gigging at various venues around and outside Kuala Lumpur.

Now to give you a sneak peak of what’s to come for the rest of December on HIP TRIP, here are some exclusive ‘behind-the-scene’ photos of the band while in the making of HIP TRIP: SEVENCOLLAR T-SHIRT.
